Why care about our historic cemeteries?

War Babies Angel, Fairview Cemetery

Bastrop, Texas

Tombstone of Warren White, a black soldier who fought in the Civil War.

Cemeteries are physical evidence of Texas’ remarkable past. They serve to honor those who came before us, but they also serve to educate. Studying the stones will reveal remnants of history and even the thoughts of our early settlers the way few other things can -- in simply reading the words so eloquently written long ago or in viewing the care taken to ensure loved ones were properly memorialized.

The Texas Historical Commission offers the following suggestions to help protect Texas’ historic cemeteries. The BCHC will focus on the cemeteries of Bastrop County during the 2017-2019 term.

  • Partner with people in the community. Create a Cemetery Watch group for cemetery protection that includes CHC appointees, local law enforcement, neighbors of the cemetery, and individuals who are interested in protecting the community’s historic cemeteries.

  • Develop a cemetery protection plan. The plan should include contact names and phone numbers for the Cemetery Watch group and area law enforcement contacts. The plan should also include instructions on what to do when vandalism or suspicious activity occurs, along with any other information that the Cemetery Watch group members need to know.

  • Clean up the cemetery. You can discourage unwanted visitors simply by picking up trash, clearing fallen branches, and trimming grass and trees.

  • Add cemetery signage. Installing signage at the entrance of a cemetery indicates that people care for the site and that it is monitored to some degree.

  • Add site lighting. If power is available, install lighting to discourage vandals and late night loitering.

  • Take photographs. Documenting existing conditions helps determine the scope of damage if a cemetery is vandalized and also an important step in the Texas Historical Commission or the Harris County designation process.

  • Educate the public. The BCHC will work toward the development of responsible stewards of cemeteries by educating the public on the significance of historic cemeteries. In the future, we hope to lead cemetery tours and create activities that teach young people about local history and cemetery maintenance.

 Bastrop County's Historic Cemeteries

Below are the cemeteries contained within Bastrop County. Please let us know if you are aware of other cemeteries in the county that are not listed.

Our deepest appreciation and thanks go to all who have surveyed, cleared, photographed and/or in some way saved a cemetery or its information. There may have been more, but an index of names and cemetery locations of a survey completed in the 1950s can be seen at the Bastrop Library.  In addition, in the 1980s, Audrey Rother, Evelyn Farris Wolf and Clyde Reynolds expended much time, money and effort to document every known cemetery in Bastrop County. Their work was generously donated to the Bastrop Public Library, who bound the lists into several book volumes, which are stored in the reference section.

Their hard work and dedication to their cemetery project has uncovered cemeteries that would have still been lost today and their attention to detail has captured the exact grave locations and information. This is the only known complete cemetery survey record.  Anyone going through the Bastrop area should stop at the library to view these volumes. You can also request a lookup from the Bastrop County Library Volunteer.

The following list is a work in progress. With the growth in Bastrop County, cemeteries are still being discovered that had been lost. Some of the surveys below are complete while others are partial surveys with the information coming from researchers, newspaper articles, undertaker records, death records, etc.
